There are about 350 students and a staff of 90 at Munkagård Upper Secondary School
The farm at Munkagård Upper Secondary School consists of about 355 acres of arable land where grain, potatoes, oil-yielding plants and peas are grown. There is also grazing land. About 30 acres are used for ecological growing. We produce milk and breed pigs, 70-75 milking cows, about 70 sows and 400 places for pigs for slaughter. Milk production exceeds 11,000 kilos per cow and year, pig production amounts to 23-24 young pigs annually.
We have most of the animals usually seen in pet shops; rabbits, rodents, cage-birds, reptiles, amphibians and various aquariums. As an introduction to working with zoo animals there is a small park where the school´s horses, goats, lamas, foxes, wallaby and various sea birds are kept. When we have training with dogs and cats the students can bring their own animals to school.
The gardening programme consists of, for instance, lay out, planning, knowledge of plants, growing in greenhouses, nursery, vegetables, pot plants, spices, perennials, etc. The gardening area has a greenhouse area of 1,500 squaremetres. Outdoor gardening is carried out on approximately 10 acres: growing nursery plants, fruit, vegetables and flowers. Tomatoes, cucumber, pot plants, cutting flowers are grown as well as small plants from various cultures.
Our park is about 7,5 acres. There are a large number of trees and bushes which are often used in the study of plants. There are also two putting greens.
Our florist- training gives a wide knowledge of this handicraft which is a creative profession, developing and changing constantly. In addition to all the obligatory main subjects, the technique and principles of floral decoration play a large part in the training. The students also study colour and design, the history of style, botany, plant knowledge and marketing. They learn how to make bouquets of flowers, flower arrangements, wreaths and bouquets for funerals and weddings: all starting from scratch. Our florist`s rooms are specially built and every student works at an ergonomically correct table.
